Fosil alanlarının listesi
Bu fosil alanları listesi, fosillerin varlığıyla dünya çapında bilinen alanların bir listesidir. Listedeki bazı girişler tek ve benzersiz bir keşif oldukları için, diğerleri ise alanda bulunan çok sayıda fosil için dikkate değerdir. Bu listedeki kayıtların çoğu Lagerstätten olarak kabul edilir (olağanüstü koruma ile olağanüstü fosiller sergileyen tortul çökeltiler - bazen korunmuş yumuşak dokular da dahil). Lagerstätten, dikkate değerlik sütununda bir notla ( ) gösterilir.
Fosiller, bir jeolojik oluşumla ilişkili olarak veya tek bir coğrafi bölgede bulunabilir. Jeolojik oluşumlar, belirli bir süre boyunca çökelmiş kayalardan oluşur. Genellikle geniş alanlar içinde dağılırlar ve bazen aynı oluşumun açığa çıktığı farklı önemli alanlar vardır.
Birçok oluşum, tüm pratik amaçlar için yalnızca tek bir yerde incelenmiştir ve hatta adlandırılmayabilir. Örneğin, hominin ile ilişkili alanlar, özellikle mağaralar, sıklıkla adlandırılmış bir jeolojik oluşumla tanımlanmaz. Bu nedenle, bazı siteler ilişkili bir oluşum olmadan listelenir.
