Herpestes

Herpestes, Kuyruksürengiller (Herpestidae) familyasına ait bir kuyruksüren cinsidir. Familyanın tip cinsidir ve birkaç alt türle birlikte on canlı türü içerir.[1] Bilimsel adı Herpestes, Johann Karl Wilhelm Illiger tarafından 1811'de önerildi.[2] 1887'de soyu tükenmiş bir tür tanımlandı.[3]

Özellikler

Yaşayan Herpestes türünün erkeklerinde, bir Y Kromozomunun otozoma transloke edilmesi nedeniyle dişilerden bir kromozom eksiktir.[4] Cinsel olarak dimorfiktirler, dişiler erkeklerden daha küçüktür. Ağırlıkları 06 ila 36 kg (13 ila 79 lb) arasında değişir.[5] Tüm bireyler yalnız yaşarlar.[6]

Taksonomi

Soyu tükenmiş Herpestes lemanensis, Fransa kökenlidir ve muhtemelen Alt Miyosen'e kadar uzanmaktadır.[3]
