Modal verb

Modal auxiliary verb, modal verb veya kısaca modal, İngilizce dilbilgisinde cümlelere zaman, gereklilik, ihtimal ve yeterlilik gibi anlamlar katan yardımcı fiil. İngilizcedeki modal verb'ler can, could, may, might, must shall, should, will ve would'dur.[1] Modal'lar; be, do ve have'le birlikte auxiliary verb'leri meydana getirir.

Örnekler
  • Can you close the door?
  • You must send this report today.
  • I won't see you tomorrow.

Modal kavramı İngilizce mood (zihnin durumları, duygu) sözcüğünden gelir.[2] Örnekler:

  • She can run really fast.
  • I could hear footsteps.
  • May I ask a few questions?
  • He said he might be late.
  • You must show your ID card.
  • We shan't be gone long.
  • You should have been careful.
  • James will regret it when he is older.
  • The windows wouldn't close.

Bunların haricinde be about to, be able to, be going to, be likely to, be supposed to, had better, have to, ought to, used to, would rather, need, dare, used to, ought to kavramları da modal görevinde kullanılabilir. Bunlar bazı kaynaklarda semi-modal olarak adlandırılır.

  • Need I say more?[3] (Daha fazla konuşmama gerek var mı?)
  • a story he dare not write down[4] (yazmaya cesaret edemeyeceği bir öykü)
