Wacken Open Air (W:O:A), Kuzey Almanya'daki Schleswig-Holstein eyaletinin Wacken adlı küçük bir kasabasında düzenlenen geleneksel açık hava heavy metal müzik festivalidir. 2011 yılında 80.000'i konuk metalsever olmak üzere toplamda 86.000 katılımcının bulunduğu festival;[2] dünyanın dört bir yanından black metal, death metal, power metal, thrash metal, gotik metal, folk metal ve hatta metalcore ile hard rock hayranlarını kendisine çekmektedir.

1990 yılında yerel Alman gruplar tarafından düzenlenen organizasyon, 1998 yılında Avrupa metal müzik takviminde önemli bir yere gelerek; Avrupa, Kuzey Amerika ve Avustralya'dan 70'in üzerinde gruba ev sahipliği yaptı. Genellikle Ağustos ayının başında başlayan festival toplam üç gün sürer. Organizasyon boyunca müzik severler, festival alanın çevresinde geniş kamp alanlarında çadır kurarlar.

2002 yılından beri Wacken Firefighters adlı gönüllü yerel itfaiye grubu festivalin açılışını yapmaktadır. 2001 yılında ise festivalin açılışı, İstanbullu Türk heavy metal grubu Knight Errant tarafından yapılmıştır.

30 Aralık 2008'de tüm biletleri tükenen festival, bir satış rekoruna da imza attı. Toplamda 70.000 bilet, festivalin başlamasına daha 200 gün varken tamamen tükendi.

Bu yılda düzenlenen festivalde "Metal Savaşları"'nın başlangıcı yapıldı. W.E.T. Sahnesi'nde gösteri yapan gruplar arasında düzenlenen bu yarışmada; birinciye para ödülleri, dünya çapında bir plak şirketiyle anlaşma ve ertesi yılın W.E.T. Sahnesi'nde bir yer verildi. 2004'te yarışan 11 grup arasından Alman "Reckless Tide" grubu birinci oldu.

Running Wild grubu çarşamba günü verdikleri konserden sonra dağıldı. Performansları CD/DVD şeklinde kaydedildi.

Cumartesi günü Parti Sahnesi'nde çalması beklenen Kampfar, kişisel sorunlar yüzünden gösteriyi iptal etmek zorunda kaldı. Bu grubun yerine Onkel Tom dahil edildi.

4 Ağutos Çarşamba'dan 7 Ağustos Cumartesi gününe dek süren festivalin afişlerinde Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Mötley Crüe ve Slayer yer aldı.

Bazı grupların özel gösteriler yaptığı festivalde, Corvus Corax "Wacken Burns" adlı gösteri ile cuma gününün ana sahne performansları kapanışını yaptı. Grave Digger grubu 30. yıllarının şerefine 1996 yılında çıkardıkları albüm Tunes of War'ı seslendirdi. Yine, Tiamat adlı grup, kuruluşlarının 20. ve albümlerinin 15. yılı olmasının şerefine 1994 yılında çıkardıkları Wildhoney adlı albümün tamamını seslendirdi.
