Sol LeWitt

Hartford, Connecticut'ta doğan LeWitt, 1945-1949 yılları arasında New York'ta Syracuse University'de okumuş; 1962'de resmi bırakıp soyut siyah ve beyaz kabartmalar, kutu ve masa benzeri yapılar üzerine yoğunlaşmıştır. 1965'ten itibaren açık veya kapalı küpü, önceden belirlenmiş mantıksal bir sistem içerisinde yapılar oluşturacak bir modül olarak kullanmış; algı, tarif ve temsil arasındaki boşluklara dil yoluyla dikkat çekmiştir. Minimalizmin indirgeyiciliği ve estetik içeriği ile diyaloğa giren LeWitt, kavramsal biçimlerin görüntü veya nesneye dönüştürülmesi sırasında oluşan permütasyonlar, değişimler ve düzensizlikleri incelemişti. 1967'de, kavramsal sanat konusunda çok etkili olan Kavramsal Sanat Üzerine Paragraflar isimli bir makale yayımlamıştır. 1968'den sonra, kendisi tarafından veya yazdığı tariflere uyarak asistanları tarafından gerçekleştirilen, sayıları 1200'ü bulmuş olan duvar desenlerine başlamıştır. 1978-1979'da New York'taki Museum of Modern Art'ta ilk retrospektif sergisi düzenlenmiştir.
