Douglas Morton Dunlop

Douglas Morton Dunlop (d. 1909 – ö. 1987), Doğu Uygarlıkları, İslam veye Avrasya tarihleri üzerine uzmanlaşmış bir akademisyendir.

Douglas Morton Dunlop, Almanya’nın Bonn şehrinde ve İngiltere’nin Oxford şehrinde tarihçi Paul Eric Kahle’nin (1875-1965) himayesinde eğitim gördü. Zeki Validi Togan, Mikhail Artamonov ve George Vernadsky gibi bilim adamlarından da etkilenmiştir. 1950 ve 60’lı yıllarda Columbia Üniversitesi’nde profesör olarak Tarih Bölümü’de dersler de vermiştir.

Douglas Morton Dunlop en çok Arap uygarlıkları ve Hazar Kağanlığı konularında yaptığı çalışmalar ile tanınmıştır. Kendisi “Hazar monarşi” konusunda en uzman araştırmacıların başında gösterilmektedir. Hazarlar’ın kültürü hakkında bilgiye ulaşabilmesi için birçok dili konuşabilmekteydi. Bu da kendisine Arap, Bizans, İbranice ve Çin kökenli kaynaklarına ulaşabilmesinde yardımcı olmuştur.[1]
