Ludwig Sylow

Peter Ludwig Mejdell Sylow (Norveççe telaffuz: [ˈsyːlɔv]) (12 Aralık 1832 - 7 Eylül 1918), Grup teorisinde temel sonuçları kanıtlayan Norveçli matematikçi.[1]

Hayatı

Christiania'da (şimdi Oslo) doğdu ve öldü. Sylow, hükümet bakanı Thomas Edvard von Westen Sylow'un oğlu ve askeri subay ve spor yetkilisi Carl Sylow'un kardeşiydi. Christiania Cathedral School (1850) ve Christiania Üniversitesine (cand.real. 1856) katıldı.[2]

Sylow, 1858'den 1898'e kadar Halden'de müdür olmadan önce Hartvig Nissen Okulu'nda bir lise öğretmeniydi. 1862'de Christiania Üniversitesi'nde Galois teorisini kapsayan bir yedek öğretim görevlisiydi. O zaman Sylow alt grupları ile ilgili teoremlerine yol açan soruyu sordu. Sylow, Sylow teoremlerini 1872'de yayınladı ve ardından Sophus Lie ile birlikte hayatının sekiz yılını vatandaşı Niels Henrik Abel'ın matematik çalışmalarını düzenleme projesine adadı. 1898'de Christiania Üniversitesi'ne profesör olarak atandı.[1][3] 1853'te Oslo Üniversitesi tarafından Veliaht Prens'in altın madalyası (Kronprinsens gullmedalje) ile ödüllendirildi. 1894'te Kopenhag Üniversitesi'nden fahri doktora unvanı aldı.[4]
